The Apostle John–Review of “The Final Eyewitness” by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins

I finished reading “The Final Eyewitness” this weekend.  I was fascinated by it.  This is the story of the last few years of the life of the Apostle John.  John was the only apostle not to die a martyr’s death and he wrote John, 1, 2, and 3 John and Revelation.  One of the things that has always fascinated me about the 11 apostles and Paul is that they along with hundreds of others were willing to die–even horrible deaths–instead of renouncing thier faith in Christ.  What a testament!

For those who subscribe to the Aethiest Nation and other “I Hate Christianity” groups,  I would suggest reading this book.  First of all—it is historical fact that Jesus lived and was crucified.  Therefore, the entirety of the Christian faith rests on one single event–the resurrection of Christ.  Without the resurrection, Jesus would be nothing more than a nice guy who claimed to be God and was therefore a lunatic.

So–what evidence do we have of the resurrection besides the hundreds of eye witnesses to it who saw Christ, ate with Him and spoke to Him?  One of the most compelling points regarding the truth of his resurrection is the 11 disciples and Paul.  These 12 men devoted their life to spreading the Word of Christ’s resurrection.  Each one of them (including John) were brought before Roman officials and told they would be stoned, crucified, beheaded, hung, or boiled in oil if they continued to declare Jesus Christ as Lord.  To save themselves, all they had to do was bow to Ceasar as Lord.

Each of them chose death.  Now just thinking logically–why would these people and many after them chose to die for what they knew was a lie?  In other words–these 11 and Paul all testified to seeing Christ after he was crucified.  They are eye witnesses to the resurrection.  If it really didn’t happen–hard to imagine they would each, independently, chose to die to prove a lie.  Not only hard to imagine–but impossible to imagine.  Yet, each of them stated they would rather be killed than renounce the name of Christ.

What amazing proof of the authenticity of the resurrection.  My prayer is that all of those who do not accept Christ realize their God-given need for a Savior and truly investigate and get to know Jesus.  It is life-changing.
